| PERSONALLY UNIQUE DATES THAT ARE IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO UNDERSTAND | |
I. Your Medicare | ||
Your IEP = the 7 month period
If you have a disability, End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (a.k.a. ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease), you may qualify for Medicare before turning 65. When you later turn 65, you will still qualify for a special enrollment period. This special period allows you to make changes to your Medicare healthcare coverage, if you desire.
II. Your Medicare Supplement (a.k.a. Medigap)
| | ||
Your Medigap GI Period = the special 6 month period that starts once you are enrolled in Medicare Part B for the FIRST TIME. This Guarantee Issue period permits you to purchase a Medigap policy without medical underwriting.
You can delay your Medigap GI Period by postponing your Medicare Part B enrollment until a later date. To avoid any penalties or gaps in coverage, it is important to understand the rules surrounding a delay of Part B enrollment. We can help you.
III. YOUR Medicare Advantage
Your Medicare Advantage ICEP surrounds the period when you are FIRST becoming eligible for Medicare. Your ICEP permits you to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, if you wish. Your ICEP begins 3 months BEFORE you are enrolled in Medicare Parts A & B. Delaying Medicare Part B enrollment allows you to delay your ICEP, until you leave other creditable coverage* (such as coverage through your employer). A Medicare Advantage Plan incorporates Medicare Parts A & B, along with drug coverage (a.k.a. Medicare Part D).
You may choose to enroll in Original Medicare Parts A and/or B, and NOT enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan at this time. To avoid penalty for not having creditable drug coverage*, you will then need to choose a drug plan, a.k.a. Medicare Part D. If you later decide that you wish to enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan, you may do so during the Annual Medicare Open Enrollment Period (MA OEP). MA OEP runs each year, from October 15 through December 7.
* | CREDITABLE COVERAGE = Coverage that will pay at least as much as the standard Medicare Part B coverage.
* | CREDITABLE DRUG COVERAGE = Coverage that will pay at least as much as Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage.
Insured State of Mind is here to help you to understand your enrollment options.
